Devlog 4: Let's get started!

Welcome to the first official dev log for my Penguin Game project! After a good three weeks of prototyping and experimenting with core mechanics, we’ve officially kicked off production. This week was all about laying the foundation for the game—setting up key systems, testing out ideas, and making sure everything flows smoothly. Now that we’re diving into full-scale development, things are about to get exciting. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to build and refine this game!

DEVELOPMENT

Player Movement

Implemented refined movement controls, including smooth and responsive player motion, along with a well-tuned jumping mechanic for better control and feel.

Player Attacks

This is an amazing mechanic! This is one of the basic mechanics in our game and it is so fun to use!!!! The heavy attack punishes your enemies high in the skies where they cant do anything anymore!!!!! The soft attack pushes them away it is fun to use!!!!!!

Ragdoll

After struggling with ragdoll implementation during prototyping, we finally got it working this time! We will be using this animate our player falling after taking hits from other penguins.

Ice Platform

Added dynamic platform mechanics, including tilt and breakable platforms. The platform tilts smoothly based on player weight and waves, adding an extra challenge. Breakable platforms crumble under pressure, forcing players to stay on the move. Slippery surfaces further enhance the difficulty, making movement more unpredictable.

Making the platform tilt smoothly, especially based on player movement, was a real challenge, but I’m glad I finally nailed it this week.

ART

Penguin Player

We kicked this week off by creating our goofy Penguin character based on a design in line with our art bible. We've made a waddle animation to bring some life in this early stage of the game's development. This week also saw unprecedented cooperation between developers and artists in succeeding to create a ragdoll system for our penguin, sure to deliver many stupid physics-based deaths in-game. (see: DEVELOPMENT/Ragdoll)

Ice and Water Shaders

Furthermore we iterated on our first water and ice shader for our game! You will see the finished versions next week so stay tuned.
